Internationally acclaimed speaker, author and wellbeing expert, Daniel Merza, travelled from Australia to empower students at Reach British School to become the best versions of themselves. He equips young adults with the emotional intelligence needed to overcome challenges, develop self-awareness, and “release the monkeys from their backs.”
All students from Years 9-12 actively participated in the workshop titled “Thriving Wellbeing,” where they explored effective strategies for handling failure and setbacks to lead happier and more fulfilling lives. Additionally, student leaders from Years 6-13 were invited to a more in-depth follow-up session called “Rise Up and Let Your Light Shine,” which delved into leadership qualities and fostered self-awareness discussions to own their unique potential.
Our Deputy Head of Teaching, Learning and Wellbeing in Secondary, Ms Anna Cavanagh, expressed RBS’s commitment to enhancing student wellbeing and resilience, highlighting that this workshop is just one of the activities the school works collaboratively with students to improve their overall happiness.
Daniel Merza shared his experience, “Spending an entire day interacting with the students at Reach British School was an absolute joy. Their enthusiasm and engagement were truly inspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed delving into discussions about the 5 monkeys, exploring their dreams and aspirations, sharing insights on positive mental health and leadership strategies, and engaging in meaningful one-on-one conversations with both students and staff. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their personal growth.”
In his parting advice to students, Daniel Merza emphasised, “Do not allow the monkeys—ENZO, DIZZY, SCOOTER, TYSON and MOI—to weigh you down. You possess the strength to keep them at bay and become the leaders of your own lives. Always believe in yourselves, and by practicing the five happy habits each day, you are steering towards a brighter and more resilient future.”
Year 7 student Laura expressed her excitement about meeting Daniel and her appreciation for the session, stating, “I loved meeting Daniel and gained valuable insights on how to boost my self-confidence and understand my unique potential.”
We look forward to continuing our journey towards improved student wellbeing, happiness and self-awareness.
